Labiaplasty changes the size or shape of the labia, most commonly the labia minora. It may be discussed when tissue causes persistent rubbing, pulling or discomfort during clothing, exercise or other activities, or when an adult has a personal appearance concern.
The surgical technique depends on the anatomy and intended change. Risks can include bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, altered sensation, pain, wound separation and the possibility of further surgery.
In this context, vaginoplasty refers to surgery intended to repair or tighten selected vaginal tissues. It may be considered after changes related to childbirth, injury or another medical condition, depending on examination findings.
Symptoms such as pelvic pressure, urinary leakage, pain or a vaginal bulge may have other causes and may require assessment by a gynaecologist, pelvic-floor specialist or another appropriate clinician before surgery is planned.
Hymenoplasty is surgery involving tissue at the vaginal opening. Requests may arise from personal, cultural or social concerns. A careful, private discussion is needed to confirm that the decision is voluntary and that expectations are medically realistic.
The appearance of the hymen cannot prove a person's sexual history. Hymenoplasty cannot restore “virginity” and cannot guarantee bleeding during future intercourse.
